Tipping Calculator Logic for POS Systems
Pre-tax vs post-tax tipping, split algorithms, cultural defaults, and implementing tip suggestions in point-of-sale applications.
Tip Calculation: Pre-Tax vs Post-Tax
Tipping on the pretax amount is more common (the tax is not a service-provided item). However, most POS systems calculate suggested tips on the post-tax total because it is simpler and produces slightly higher tip amounts. Our calculator supports both options so you can match your POS implementation to customer expectations.
Even and Uneven Splits
For even splits: (bill + tip) / people = per-person share. For uneven splits (one person had more expensive items), calculate each person's subtotal, compute the total tip as a percentage of the combined bill, then assign each person's tip proportionally to their share. Never split the tip evenly when the bill items are uneven — it creates resentment and accounting errors.
Locale-Aware Defaults
Tip percentages vary by country: 15-20% US, 5-10% Europe, 0% Japan (tipping can be considered rude). In the US, 30% of diners tip based on the suggested amounts at the bottom of the receipt. When building POS software, offer locale-based presets and let the merchant customize them. Our calculator includes a country selector with culturally-appropriate defaults.
