Text Analysis for SEO: Beyond Word Count
Use word count, readability scores, keyword density, and content structure analysis to write content that ranks better in search engines.
Why Raw Word Count Is Not Enough
Google uses multiple content quality signals, not just word count. A 500-word article with original data, expert quotes, and clear structure can outrank a 3000-word article of surface-level content that rehashes the top search results. The key metrics are: topical depth (does the article cover subtopics comprehensively?), authority (citations, author expertise, external references), and engagement (time on page, bounce rate).
Keyword Density and TF-IDF
Classic keyword density (how often a term appears ÷ total words) is a weak signal because it rewards repetition over quality. Modern search uses TF-IDF and semantic analysis to understand topic relevance. A 2-3% density for the primary keyword is a reasonable target, but natural language and related terms (LSI keywords) matter more than exact-match frequency. Our word counter highlights the top 10 most frequent words to help you spot overused terms.
Readability and Content Structure
The Flesch-Kincaid readability score targets a grade level appropriate for your audience. For developer guides, aim for grade 10-12 (technical but clear). For general audiences, grade 6-8. Use short paragraphs (2-4 sentences), descriptive headings, and bullet points to improve scannability. These structural elements are direct ranking signals for featured snippets.
